At Funkey Fitness, we offer swimming lessons in Hemel Hempstead for children, adults, and swimmers with additional needs.
Below you’ll find answers to our most frequently asked questions about lesson structure, safety, qualifications, and bookings.
Who are your swimming lessons suitable for?
Our swimming lessons are suitable for children aged 3 years and above, as well as adults of all abilities. Lessons are grouped by age and ability, from beginners and non-swimmers through to more advanced swimmers, ensuring everyone is placed in a class that best supports their confidence and progress.
Where are lessons held?
All Funkey Fitness swimming lessons are held at Astley Cooper School, Hemel Hempstead.
Full location details will be provided once your booking is confirmed.
What swimming programme do you follow?
We follow the Swim England Learn to Swim Programme, covering Stages 1–10.
This nationally recognised programme focuses on:
- Water confidence and safety
- Correct stroke technique
- Breathing, coordination and stamina
- Progression at a pace that suits each swimmer
Swimmers are assessed regularly and progress through the stages as their skills, confidence and ability develop. Certificates and awards are used to celebrate achievement and motivate swimmers throughout their journey.
What days and times do you run lessons?
We currently offer swimming lessons on the following days:
- Monday: 4:00pm – 6:30pm
- Tuesday: 4:00pm – 7:00pm
- Thursday: 4:00pm – 6:30pm
- Saturday: 9:00am – 3:00pm
- Sunday: 9:00am – 1:00pm
Do we need to bring any equipment?
We provide all essential teaching equipment.
Swimmers just need:
- Swimwear
- A swimming hat (available to purchase for £5)
- Goggles if required
Everything else is taken care of by us.
How much do lessons cost?
Lessons start from £11.50 per session.
Lessons are booked and paid for per term, with fees payable in advance.
We run three terms per year
Can we attend a catch-up lesson if we miss one?
Due to lesson structure, planning, health & safety requirements, and class availability, we are unfortunately unable to offer catch-up lessons.
Lessons still run with full staffing and pool hire costs, therefore refunds cannot be issued for missed sessions.
However, if your child has a medical issue lasting longer than 3 consecutive weeks, we will add the missed lessons onto the following term, subject to confirmation.
Do you offer SEN / additional needs lessons?
Yes, absolutely.
We offer:
- Small group lessons, or
- 1-to-1 lessons, depending on what works best for the swimmer
Our experienced and empathetic coaching team will always work with you to find the most suitable option for your child’s needs.
Pool details
Lessons take place in a 20m pool, heated to approximately 31°C.
- Depth ranges from 1 metre to 2 metres at the deep end
- Suitable for all abilities, from beginners to advanced swimmers
Are lessons term-time only?
Yes — our main programme runs during term time only, with approximately 12-week terms.
However, we also run holiday crash courses during school holidays for swimmers who want to boost confidence, catch up, or make faster progress.
How long is each lesson?
- Standard lessons are 30 minutes
- Our Advanced Stage 8 class runs for 1 hour
What is the class size?
Our lessons have a maximum of 6 swimmers per class.
This ensures plenty of individual attention and support
Are teachers in the pool?
Yes.
For non-swimmers and beginners, our teachers are in the water providing hands-on support, reassurance, and confidence-building at all times.
Are children assessed for swimming awards?
Yes. All swimmers are regularly assessed in line with the Swim England Learn to Swim Programme (Stages 1–10).
Assessments are ongoing and form part of normal lesson time, allowing children to progress naturally and confidently without pressure. When a swimmer is ready, they will move to the next stage and receive the appropriate award or certificate to recognise their achievement.
Our focus is always on confidence, technique, safety, and enjoyment, ensuring each swimmer progresses at their own pace.
Are your teachers qualified?
At Funkey Fitness, we believe that great teaching is ongoing, not a one-off qualification. Our coaching team continually develops their skills to ensure the highest standards of safety, teaching, and swimmer progression.
Our instructors hold a wide range of nationally recognised qualifications, including:
- Swim England Level 1 & Level 2 in Swimming Teaching
- ASA Level 1 & Level 2 in Teaching Aquatics
- STA Level 2 Certificate in Teaching Swimming
- STA Level 2 in Disability Swimming
- STA Level in Teaching Parent & Baby / Pre-School Swimming
- STA Swim Teacher Tutor Qualification
- Level 3 in Training & Education

We hold comprehensive swimming club insurance through Swimsure, including:
- Public & Products Liability Insurance
- Employers’ Liability Insurance
- Cover for pool operator use
- Member-to-member liability
- Professional advice cover
Our insurance is underwritten by Allianz Insurance plc, with cover up to:
- £5 million public liability
- £10 million employers’ liability
All policies are fully up to date.

Yes.
